Investigation by the State Police and the Local Police of Cornaredo. Thanks to the GPS positions of several stolen construction vehicles, equipment worth €300,000 was recovered in Cornaredo.
The State Police of Rho and the Local Police of Cornaredo recovered and returned to the rightful owner two trucks, an asphalt paver, an asphalt spreader, a road roller, and an asphalt compactor, which had been stolen on September 23 from a company specializing in excavation and earthmoving.
The recovery was made possible thanks to the locations transmitted by a GPS system installed on one of the vehicles. The joint operation carried out by officers of the Rho-Pero Police Station and personnel of the Cornaredo Local Police Command to search for the vehicles was complex because the satellite system was under “GPS spoofing,” a term indicating the technique of manipulating the GPS signal, which allows the position to be falsified through a fake signal generated by an attacker known as a “spoofer.”
After several searches carried out in the identified industrial area, the vehicles were located at No. 16 Via Copernico. The inspection involved three warehouses and an adjoining outdoor area where the stolen vehicles were parked. In addition, inside one of the warehouses, the shell of a Fiat Panda, also stolen, was found. About seven vehicle shells were stacked in the warehouse, and checks are underway to verify their stolen origin. Investigators are continuing their inquiries to identify the actual users of the facility used to conceal the stolen goods. The value of the vehicles returned to the owner has been estimated at approximately €300,000.
