All crazy about car sharing: more than 1 million subscribers, 7679 vehicles, 29 active services, 11 operators and 35 interested cities. These are the data for Italy updated to 31 December 2017 and contained in the Second National Report on Sharing Mobility of the National Sharing Mobility Observatory. And the numbers continue to grow, thanks above all to free-flow services which account for nearly 97% of rentals. While the historical operators Enjoy and Car2go have exceeded 500 thousand members, new companies are entering the Italian market: Drivenow, one of the largest in the world, in Milan; Bluetorino in Turin and Corrente in Bologna. The spread of shared electric cars is also increasing, offered by Share'ngo, E-Vai, Bluetorino and Corrente.
Free floating dominates over station based
In free-floating car sharing, taking and return of cars can take place at any point within the area provided by the service, while in conventional car sharing (station based) the user picks up and returns the car in well-defined parking spaces. The number of cars used in free floating car sharing services went from 5730 in 2016 to 6743 in 2017: an increase of 18%. Share’ngo has also activated its service in the city of Modena and Enjoy in Bologna. In addition, three new free-flow operators have entered the Italian market: DriveNow, BlueTorino and Corrente. Station based car sharing, on the other hand, remained stable. 94% of the people registered in at least one car sharing system subscribe to a free-flow service.
Mobility becomes increasingly sustainable thanks to electric cars
Corrente and Bluetorino are the new ecological entries in the field of free floating car sharing. With a fleet made up of 100% electric vehicles, they share the environmental record so far held only by Share'ngo. The latter operator has now expanded its service to Modena as well, making it the only Italian city with a fully electric car sharing service. After the Emilian, the cities with the largest share of electric cars on the total running fleet are Bari and Florence. Of the 21 cities in which a conventional or free-flow car sharing service is active, 14 are also offering vehicles with electric motors. In addition to the three already mentioned above, the E-vai operator, which operates in Lombardy, also offers its users a fleet of 85% electric vehicles. In addition, starting from the first months of 2019, a shared mobility service on electric cars, promoted by Axpo Italia and Share’ngo, will also debut in Genoa.
Free flow, how many and how to pay
Active operators managing car sharing services on the national territory are 12, of which half of them free floating type. To offer a conventional service are: the National Consortium of Carsharing Managers, which operates in Rome, Bologna, Venice, Parma, Palermo, Brescia and Padua; Ubeequo in Milan; tours in Verona, Genoa and Bari; E-Vai in Lombardy; Carsharing Sudtirol in Sudtirol and Playcar in Cagliari.
